| Founded in 1889, on land donated by Dr. Jerry Guin, the town of Guin is centrally located to the larger cities of Jasper, Tuscaloosa, and Florence, AL and Columbus and Tupelo, MS. As a part of the Marion County School System, Marion County High School and Guin Elementary School are both accredited by the State and Southern Association of Schools with graduates consistently scoring above the state average on achievement tests. The community is very supportive of the school and its 600 students. Guin is known for its Park and Recreation facilities. Guin Hayden Riley Park offers recreational facilities for the whole family; two playgrounds, two lighted tennis courts, two lighted basketball courts, two pavilions with picnic tables, and a lighted walking trail. The water park offers two water slides (one kiddy slide and one 323 ft. large slide) and an olympic size swimming pool plus a kiddy pool. The park also boasts one of the top softball facilities in northwest Alabama. Three multi-purpose fields play host to youth baseball and youth and adult softball leagues during spring and summer. Fall offers flag football and team handball. Winter has basketball games. Guin has two annual events. July 4th offers a big day of swimming, music, and food topped off by a spectacular fireworks show. Mayfest is held the second Saturday in May each year with entertainment, numerous food vendors, arts and crafts, an antique car show, and helicopter rides. Guin is proud to be the home of 3-M, Coca-Cola Distribution Center, and two manufactured housing plants, as well as, numerous locally owned businesses. Its newly developed industrial board is becoming active in the growth of Guin. Transportation access for industry includes railroad, close proximity to Corridor X, and the Marion County Airport. On April 3, 1974, the town was destroyed by an F-5 tornado, killing many and injuring many more. But the spirit and determination of the community worked together to rebuild this strong community.
